    What would be the best way to transfer data from a hard drive from an previous computer to a new one?

      Hi assuming the coputers are both of the same type ie mac or pc the hanging the hard drive as a slave is the quickest way to transfer data. The next is adding network cards to both and last of all direct cable connection using laplink or a similar software.

      Probably the easiest would be to install the old hard drive as a slave in the new computer and copy the files.
      Either way you do it, do not expect to just copy installed programs from one drive to the other. You should re-install software. Data you can copy.

      If you are not able to follow the great suggestion from above. You may want to look into getting some disk cloning software. Norton Ghost works pretty well. It will burn an image of a partition and compress it for you. If the image is not too big you can even have it copy the image across ZIP disks or burn it to a CD.

      I regularly use direct cable connection (serial port,115K) WIN95 w/o any third party software. This may not be the best way; I find it the easiest.
