Use Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image.

If you do not want to spend money, you can use DOS command XCOPY from Command Prompt. The procedure is rather simple but you have to connect the two hard drives (8GB and 40GB) to a second computer with Windows 2K or XP in NTFS.

Post a comment if you need more information.

Either use any tool like norton ghost or u need to copy all the data from your current hard disk to your new one including hidden system files, so that u get the bootable system, or u need to install O.S. again.

Who made the new HD???????????????

If Maxtor go to their site and download their HD tool and use it on it is a copy commmand

If Western Digital go to their site and download the Lifeguard tool and use it to set up and copy your old HD to the new

Most HD mfg have a tool on their sites to assist you in setting up and utilizing their HD to its max

No points please, I just wanted to 'second' Fred07 's answer above. There is no sense spending $60-70 dollars on unneeded software when you can simply download free software from the drive manufacturer. I have used Maxtor's and Western Digital's software with no problems, and I would assume most other manufacturers have similar software. Also, you cannot simply copy files from one drive to another on an XP system.
