triple boot problems

By metallica ·
I am dual booting Win98,Win2000 server and linux mandrake 7.2 on a 30 gb hd.I installed Win98 first then I installed Linux and finally win 2000 on the 3rd partition using fat 32.Linux is no longer in the boot menu Win 2000 works great and can see the win98 partition. When I boot to Win 98 and try opening my computer or accessing the file system in any way the computer slows to a crawlI switched my win2000 partition to ntfs and they both work fine but now windows 98 cannot see the windows 2000 partition since it is a different file system.I was thinking maybe I could switch win 2000 back to fat 32 and add a path statment to the windows 98 autoexec.bat file but I wanted to get some hints first.By the way I have a 800 mhz athalon processor with 256 mb of ram.I was also thinking of reinstalling linux and using the linux boot loader.By the way I am learning the ins and outs of linux and win 2000 so this is the reason for triple booting

triple boot problems

Your triple boot environment will be much happier with FAT32. Linux can read and write FAT32, where Linux can only read NTFS safely.

The one thing to be careful of when installing Win98 & Win2000 to the same partition is that programs from BOTH wanna use C:\PROGRAM FILES. This can wreck havoc on the system if the application is installed on both OS's as the last one installed's settings win. A trick I use is I have created C:\Program Files\Win98 and C:\Program Files\Win2K and I install programs to those directories instead of the default.

Install Linux last and LILO will be happily loaded with a boot option called 'dos' to access your win98/win2000 OS's
