Trouble Connecting XP & Win98

By SPBrown ·
I have a laptop running XP Pro set up on a small wireless network using a Linksys router to a cable modem. There are two desktops, one wired running XP Home and the other wireless running Win98. The Win98 computer has a shared printer on it. The wired XP Home machine prints fine to the shared printer, the wireless XP Pro machine gets an error message saying that it doesn't have permission to access this resource. Any idea how I can get the XP Pro machine to be able to access the Win98 machine and its resources?

Is this an HP printer? You will probably need to setup the XP drivers for this printer on the XP computer (as a local printer) and then go into the printer properties --> Ports and re-direct the port to print to the IP address of the computer with the printer share.

Anna... thank you for your answer, but the problem is not setting up the printer - it works with the other XP machine - but rather that the XP Pro machine with the wireless connection does not have permissions to access the machine or its printer. You can see the Win 98 machine with the shared printer in Nwtwork Neighborhood, but attempting to access it gives the error message that you do not have permission to view this resource.

Thank you but this isn't the answer. Don't forget the other WinXP machine can access the resource in question, albeit wired and not wireless.

The Win98 Computer must have the WinXP Pro user/password in it's access control list.

Go to Control Panel --> Users and Passwords and Add in the WinXP Pro user and assign him/her those rights.

If that does not work, then you have a wirless/share problem. Make sure that the wireless computer (WinXP Pro) shares the same network specifications with the other computers.

There are no users defined on the Win98 machine. Thank you but this isn't the answer. Don't forget the other WinXP machine can access the resource in question, albeit wired and not wireless.

You might check XP firewall. If you have it turned on, on either of the XP boxes try turning it off and restarting the PCs. I have seen odd issues with XP firewall. In my home network I have seen the XP box with it turned on not allow me to accessthe other XP box that had XP firewall turned off. I know its backwards but it happened. This may not fix your issue but thought you could test it out.

The only other thing is basics. Make sure both systems have the same username and password. If I rem right with 98 you can set the password for the share(although i dont rem doing that for printers). Make sure it all matches.

Also make sure all the same protocols are setup on each PC. You might try turning on file and printer sharing if it isnt already on the machine that cant get to the printer.

These are just my initial thoughts. hope they get you in the right direction.

Same answer as Anna777, but reversed. The WinXP computer must be set up with a user that has the same name and password as the W98 machine.
