Troubleshoot after reformat and install to 2003 server or XP

I purchased an Compaq Presario V6000 laptop. It came with Windows Vista operating system. I didn’t like Vista, so I reformatted the hard drive, and tried to install Windows XP Pro or Windows 2003 Server. The install could not find HDD drive. Is there anything I can do to get Windows XP or 2003 to recognize the hard drive, and install XP or 2003?
