Trust Relationship

By Lino767 ·
I have four offices connected through VPN. All of them have the same domain name. Do I need to have differnet domain name for each of them so that I be able to configure the trust relashinsip? or is there any workaround? I prefer to keep the domain names as is...I am in the process of upgrading all the servers to W2K.

Just want to verify your environment:

Do you have 4 offices that share a single domain name and use the same domain controller(s)?

or

Do you have 4 offices that each have totally independant domains (and domain controllers), and just happento have the same domain names?

If your environment is the former, you won't need to create any trust relationships.

If your environment is the latter (as I suspect from your question), You wont be able to keep the domain names as is.

You essentially have a case where you have 4 identical brothers, all named John. How do you tell them apart and how to you specify which one you are addressing when you say the name John?

If you have have 4 domains, all named mydomain, how do tell the domain <mydomain> to trust the domain <mydomain> and which <mydomain> do you want to trust. Matters will be further aggravated if you try to upgrade to Active Directory (AD).

Even though when creating an AD domain you can specify a domain name completely different than the existing domain name, AD still maintains the existing domain name as the NetBIOS domain name. Many networking services still rely on the NetBIOS domain name vs. the AD domain name.

In order to work, each domain MUST have a different domain name (both AD and NetBIOS).

Hope this clears things up.
