About a month ago, my Lexmark Z32 stopped printing; Win98SE started taking 5-10 minutes (instead of 30 seconds…) to load.
Trying to print always hung the PC, tho’ after a few minutes I could launch a new app (or alt-tab between progs) – but no printing…
I tried a new (different) printer – same story. And another…
I got desperate: I ran regedit, deleted any and all keys pertaing to “lpt1:” or “printer” or “Lexmark” or “Brother” (the laser I tried) – then deleted all references tothe same in win.ini and system.ini…
This allowed the printer port to get recognized (not done for a while…) and the installation program for the Lexmark (most recent download) got to 100% – then hung…
I read in many posts about copying WinME’s spoolss.dll file in the win\sys dir (no difference), and that there may be some problem with anti-virus programs – so I uninstalled any and all I had – still no effect.
Does somebody know of how to strip any *other* references to lpt1, printer(s), etc., that I may have missed? I want to assume Win98 is just
confused, and that *hopefully* I can get it unconfused enough for it to re-initialize … something. I don’t want to reinstall Win98, due to the many progs installed (not to mention gazillions of MBs of critical, etc., updates…)
