Trying to add CD-W to tower can't!!!

By cgurney ·
I've done this 1000 times but can't figure this one out. I'm trying to add a CD-Writer to a Dell. The Dell currently has a cd-rom, zip drive, and floppy drive. When I physically installed the CD-Writer it didn't recognize it. Put the ribbon fromthe cd-rom to it, didn't work. I tried all possible ways to connect it and I can't get all the drive to work. HELP!!!

Ok. I'll also assume you have a hard disk in there too, though you don't explicitly say so. I'll also assume that your ZIP drive is an ATAPI IDE type rather than hangs off the parallel port type.

IDE has two channels, primary and secondary. Up totwo devices can be connected per channel, and they must be set up in Master/Slave mode accordingly. The floppy resides on it's own controller so it won't be an issue. So, you could do the following

Primary Controller:
Hard disk - Master
ZIP drive - Slave

Secondary Controller:
CD-RW Drive - Master
CD-ROM drive - Slave

You may also have an IRQ issue going on too. Go to Start--->Settings--->Control Panel--->System--->Device manager tab. If you don't find any errors there the IRQ's should be okay.

You may also need to add a specific driver for the CD-RW (usually comes with the drive).

Trust this helps.

It would be helpful to know the OS and the make/model of drive as there are some known issues with some combinations. Most of those issues, though, deal only with the writing of CDs but it does help narrow the list of possible causes.

However, if you substituted the CD-RW for the existing CD drive and didn't change anything else and it still didn't work, I would seriously consider a hardware problem with the drive itself because the BIOS should at least see some kind of IDE device on that cable (assuming you have power to the drive).

The CD-Writer might be bad......is the device picked up when the system goes through POST and if it's IDE is that position enabled in BIOS?
