Trying to make a FAT16 partition larger

    by notasusual ·

Does anyone know of a program that will make a FAT16 partition larger than 2047MB?
I have a Ghost image that has a partition on it that is 4092 in size and is FAT16, so I know it can be done…
None of the partitioning programs I have tried (AndI went as far as Partition Magic 6.0) seem to be able to do it. I have seen a few freeware programs that make claims that they can, but I am wary of using them.
    Thanks in advance!

No, it’s not a good idea, hell it’s just a waste of space. I have Norton Ghost and have had problems like this. Now, are you basing the FAT16 on the file name shown in Ghost Explorer, if so ignore it.

So this is what you do, make your 4 gig FAT32 partition. Open the image file with Ghost Explorer, select all the files within it on the right hand side, right-click and select restore. Follow the instructions to restore all the files to your 4 Gig partition and that’s it. You really don’t want to try to change it to FAT16.

The best part of Norton Ghost is that as long as there is room, it will reformat and repartition the new drive, exactly the same way the original drive was. Be very careful when using Norton Ghost, a bobo with that program means loosing the contents of your entire hard drive…not fun!

Again, you do not need to change the File Allocation Table to 16. At 4 Gig leave it with FAT32 and let Ghost transfer the files from 16 to 32.

All of this is assuming youwant to transfer the Ghost image back to your hard drive. Read the documentation.

If I wanted a FAT32 4GB partition, I’d just use Fdisk, answer Yes to the large drive support question…..The problem is, the platform being ran on these machines is NT. All of the images we have at our site are FAT – not NTFS – or again, I would not have the limitations of 2GB. Nice try…….

You can’t make a FAT16 partition larger than 2.15 gig if you’re using DOS, Win 3.1, or Win 9x. It’s a limitation of those operating systems.

NT will allow you to create a 4 gig FAT16 partition.

Exactly what I was looking for! I knew it was simple, but no one in the department could remember how!
The problem we faced was that we had no way to defrag NTFS drives without buying an enterprise version of an appropriate defrag utility. But with the drives using FAT16, we can do it from the server using the utilities we already have. With conversation to Windows 2000 being slated for 1st quarter of next year, we just needed a stop-gap until then. Thanks!
