Trying to make Space on my Hard Drive

By jimrossy ·
I am trying to clean out my hard drive. I have a lot of files on my hard drive that I have not used in a long time. I need to weed out the files that I do not use regularly anymore and move them to my external hard drive.

What is the fastest way that I can find the largest files so I can move them to my external hard drive so I can make more room on the hard drive on my laptop?

Thank You!

Copy all

I would copy all files to the external (For backup) then just delete the files that you don't need on your laptop. if you view by detail you can see last time a file was modified, size, and when it was created.

Thank you for the suggestion! If I can't find software to do this task I will clean my hard drive this way.

Files, or programs?

by dpalsen In reply to Trying to make Space on ...

If you're just trying to find the biggest files, the previous answer will help. If there are entire applications you don't use, however, go into the add/remove programs, and it should tell you how much space each application uses. There are a few REALLY big ones (MS office, games, etc.) that use up a ton of hard drive space, and if you don't use some of these, you may be able to free up space that way.

Another way to go may be a rebuild. Do a COMPLETE backup first onto the external drive, then wipe the drive, reinstall windows, and reinstall all of your apps, and move just the documents you use regularly back onto the laptop.

Thanks for the advice. If the software does not work I will resort to this method.

Solved...

The fastest way would be to install a piece of software called Tree size explorer whcih can be found here: http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/
I'm assuming its a windows box, once downloaded you can either purchase or use the trial version, runa scan on which ever drive you want to free up data on os see what is taking up space....

Hope this helps ; )

Treesize also comes as a fully free edition...

So you're not stuck using either the trial version and/or buying it outright.

The only 'thing' the free version doesn't have is all the flavoursome eye candy, but the scans are identical.
