Tweaking the Network Client Administrato

By JHook ·
Hi,
My department uses Norton Ghost (it's great!) to "image" every new machine we roll out. However, I have only been able to map to the ghost share using netBEUI. Because netBEUI is not routable, I loose the flexibility to "ghost" a machine on a different subnet. I just learned how to make a network installation disk from the Server, but the list of NICs doesn't contain the card that we are using. I was told that it's possible to alter the Network Installation Disk so that I could make it fitour current NIC. Can someone help me out here. It would be great to be able to upgrade all our 95 PC's without having to move them or change their subnet.

Have you tried using Ghost Multicast Server? I have used it to simultaneously ghost 30 PC's using Multicast. The great thing about multicast server is that it doesn't bog down your network with traffic when imaging multiple PC's...it pushes out one copy, and the multicast clients pick it up. Multicast assist wizard will walk you effortlessly through the creation of a tcp/ip multicast client boot disk. It doesn't get any easier than this. E-mail me if you need additional details.

Once you have the Network Installation Disk set up, you have to make just two changes to it.

The first is to copy the driver for your NIC to the floppy and the second is to make the appropriate changes to the SYSTEM.INI and PROTOCOL.INI files.
In SYSTEM.INI, you'll find a line "netcard=yournetcard.dos" that will need to be changed and there will probably be several places in PROTOCOL.INI where you'll have to make the substitution.

The only problem I've had is that some NIC drivers have gotten pretty bloated so you may have to erase the original driver to make room for the new one.

Hope this gives you a good start!
