Two Domains and One Laptop

By bbickmore ·
I have a user that has a laptop (WinXP Pro) and usually resides in an area office. The laptop is joined to the Win 2000 domain in that office. Problem occurs when he comes to the main office. We have a Win Serv 2003 domain. In order for him to access the mapped folders on our network I need to join him to our domain. I would like him to be able to access our files without having to re-configure the domain. What is the best solution??

Domain Membership

The laptop will have to be moved from one domain to another. The system can only be a member of one domain at a time.

You can leave it in a workgrup and he could authenticate to domain resources, but he would have to enter his user account, password and the correct domain to access those resources.

Stay in the office domain

I used to use a tool called network switcher to swap between domains. It really just stored the required registry settings and when rebooted effectively swapped domains.

I think it is best to stay a member of the "home" domain and authenticate to the new file shares by using UNC names, to map a drive and entering username and password.
