Just heard on the news that a 22 year old man was given a two year jail sentence today for distributing a mass-mailing virus that hit 27000 computers in 47 countries in December 2001.
The person concerned was from Llandudno in North Wales, UK and his tracking and arrest was facilitated by Scotland Yard’s Computer Crime Unit with assistance from the FBI in the USA.
Now…he boasted about three virii he had written in various chat rooms on the internet and this was what started the trail that finally identified him and helped his arrest.
This brings up several points for discussion!
Is two years in jail enough or is it too much?
If 27000 computers got infected and possibly put out of commission, where was the security, virus checking and preventative measures?
If you were going to commit a cybercrime…would you advertise the fact in internet chat rooms?!
