Unable to browse the network

We are using NT 4.0 Server as a BDC to a Corporate Wide WAN, we have recently developed a problem browsing the network. Whenever one attempts to browse the network through "Network Neighborhood", mapping a drive to a share, or browsing while installing a network printer, the error message, "Unable to browse the network" is returned.

Mapping to shares or printers by entering the full name of the device works just fine. No one else on the WAN reports having the same problem.

Have you checked the event viewer to see if there is a problem with the Master browser Service? Sometimes this produces the error you describe.

I've run into a similar problem and it all revolved about the domain trust.

Once the trust was OK everything just re-appeared.

WINS issue?

So you can map the share fine via IP? If not then I agree with the other post it is most likely a permission issue. However, if you can it sounds like it could potentially be a WINS issue...On that side of the WAN do you have a backup WINS server running? Is your network subnetted / or have multiple VLANS? If this appears to be the case try adding the other BDC's / PDC in your LMHOST file, or add a WINS server (or WINS proxy) to that VLAN, subnet, or side of the WAN.
