Unable to connect with the network

I have a Dell workstation that cannot interact with the network. The network is ATM. I updated the driver and changed the NIC and verfied that the port is working and I even instaled a fresh copy of W2K pro.
No exclamation marks in the device manager and it shows no conflicts. only If you ping 127.0.0.1 you recieve a reply. If you delete the file atmlane.sys from the system32 folder and install the driver again the workstation works fine but as soon as you restart the mechine it returns back as it was.
Any Idea..
