Unable to copy files on XP network

    Locked

    by l. dennis ·

Using XP Prof with home tcp/ip network thru a router.
Have file sharing on subject files, simple file sharing
and file and printer sharing enabled. When try copy files
from one computer to another I get the message “Cannot
copy ‘filename’:access is denied. Make sure the disk is
not full or write protected and file not currently in use.”
(file is not full and not is use). This also occurs when I
try to rename files using My Network Places. I found and read the
MS knowledge base article 810907 that admitted an XP
problem in copying network files. They have a preliminary
fix that has not been completely tested but suggest you
wait for SP-2 unless you really need it. I need a fix but
am cautious in this case. I’m wondering if anyone out
there has used this fix and what the results have been.

Also, if anyone has a workaround or can tell me what I may
be missing here it would be appreciated.

Do you get this message when you copy from the “client” or the computer where the shared folders are? If that is the case, it sounds like a permissions error. Right click on the file, click properties, then on the security tab, and see if “everyone” is there. That is the only problem I have had here when transfering files between computers here at work.
