Unable to enter password. Windows XP bug?

By tongelreep ·
I have the following setup:

Windows XP pro
Workgroup
two accounts (one Administrator)
Account lockout threshold set to 3

To start with. Everything works fine with SP2 installed. But after installing the microsoft updates the system behaves as described below.

First i login to one of my accounts.
I do a logoff.
In the welcoming sreen all the password fiels are frozen. I cannot login to my other account and the only possibility is to reboot the machine.

This is some basic functionality that you want if there are more then one user on a pc. Somehow the possibility to switch users after logging off has become a problem. When i keep logged in and i do a change user everything works as expected, but when i logoff i am not able to logon to whatever account.

Workaround

by NickNielsen In reply to Unable to enter password. ...

The XP Welcome screen locks for me as well. If the PC itself is not locked up, the workaround is to press <Ctrl><Alt><Del> twice. This should bring up the standard log-in dialog, which will allow you to sign in.

You might also go to Control Panel | Users and uncheck the "Allow Fast User Switching" checkbox, apply, uncheck the "Use Welcome Screen" checkbox, apply and exit. Then go back in and reenable the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching.
