Unable to get my desktop

By kenyae ·
After downloading something off the internet yesterday at work (that's what I get), and rebooting my system, I am not longer able to get my desktop (WinNT). When I try to load original configuration, I get a core dumb, and need to contact my admin. But after rebooting again, I can get to my log on. After logging on, I get the blue screen of death. I am able to load task manager, and load majority everything except my explorer.exe, control.exe (all along that line).

Some of the error messages I am getting:
Original Cofiguration: 0x00000007f (,,,)Unexpected _Kernel_Mode_Trap
After login: The instruction at 0x00405186 at "0x000000000". The memory could not be "read"
Trying to launch explore, and control: Cannot find the file "name" or one of its components. And sometime explore launches, and disappear along with (systray, desktop, etc)

Any help will be greatly apprectiated.

Technet suggests its a problem with Advanced Program Interrupt Controller (APIC) in the BIOS

SYMPTOMS
========

The following STOP error message appears on your Windows NT Server:

STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000F, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

This problem only occurs on single-processor systems with the Intel Pentium Pro
processor.

RESOLUTION
==========

Disable the local Advanced Program Interrupt Controller (APIC) in the BIOS. Not
all vendors have implemented enabling and disabling of the local APIC as a BIOS
option. If this is the case, contact the system vendor and request an updated
BIOS that corrects Pentium Pro erratum 5AP and 6AP.

NOTE: Not every 7F - F fault in a Pentium Pro single processor system is
necessarily traceable to the APIC.

This to is from Microsoft:
If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again. Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows NT. For information about the hardware, contact the supplier. If you are installing Windows NT for the first time, check the Windows NT system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system. Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows NT. If Windows NT is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file. If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot. If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk. If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.

Try restarting your system instead of turning it off and back on again. We had a similar problem in which the "blue screen of death" kept appearing every time we turned the system off and back on again. If we hit the restart button instead, it somehow skipped the core dump and allowed us to log on again. Unfortunately, this probably will not fix your problem but may get you at least one step further.

Good luck!

If there is a ERD created at the time of install,insert in the a drive,while system is off and boot up system,it should load the files from the disk after files are loaded reboot the system.
2nd option
Boot the system in safe mode,from the hot keyin lower left corner and select the option to boot from last known good configuration.
