Unable to install Office 97

By beaverdam sam ·
I just got a new computer with Windows XP home edition. I have tried to load Office 97 Professional and have been unable to, it locks up after about 4% completed. I have tried compatibility mode using Win 95, 98, 2000 and NT as well as just trying to load it straight in through XP but it is doing the same thing. Just to make sure it isn't the disk, I reinstalled it on my Win 95 (98 U/G) machine with no problem. Any thoughts?

Tried everything and yes, I was logged on as admin. I sent another mail with the fix. Believe it or not, it was the DVD+RW.

Default answer, close any open apps, tsr programs, virus apps.

Long shot- Try using msconfig from the run command, on the boot.ini tab, advanced, MAX_MEM, limit RAM to 256 if you run more.

Here's a link to MS's paper on running software in compatability mode.

Do you have the compatability updates for XP installed?
Many software packages do not function if the c updates are not installed.

1. If you check in Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer - do you see any errors relating to Office 97 install?

2) Clean out Temp Folders and TIF - Log on with Admin rights and try again.

3) This is a Full Office 97 install CD- not an upgrade version - right?

Yes, this is the full version, not OEM, academic, or upgrade.

Thanks to everyone for the help. It seems that the problem is in my factory installed NEC DVD+RW, Model# ND-1100A. I did everything I could think of then, just to ensure it wasn't the disc, I reloaded it a few times in my other computer --- flawlessly. So I installed my CD burner from the other computer and it loaded up with no problem. Seems the DVD just couldn't read the disc. Again, thanks for the help.

I don't know if I'm doing this right or not. But this was the fix.
