Unable to install/remove Office 2000

By JustAnAdmin ·
We had a system crash that I was able to repair and eventually get logged back into Windows 2000. After the repair, however, some programs had messages stating they needed to be reinstalled.

When I tried reinstalling Office 2000 Pro, I got the following message:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available."

I inserted the CD and pointed the installation to the data1.msi file on the CD, but still no luck. It seems the previous network admin used a different source for installing Office than what I was left with, and I am unable to reinstall the software. The CD I have is the only media I have been able to locate. I am also not able to remove Office without the original media, I get the same message as above.

Does anyone know of a method of getting around this error, or possibly just removing Office from this system entirely so I can just go ahead and reinstall?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Ok, I found several hits in the Registry you should look at.

They are:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\InstallProperties

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}

These keys all have individual entries with names like "LastSourceUsed" or "InstallSource". This is where the install path is located.

I don't know which entry to change to fix this, so change them all! Set all of them to be the CD-ROM drive on the crashed Win2K box. See if that works.

Also, there is a subfolder for almost all of the keys called Net that also has a entry called "1" that also has the install path. To be safe, I would change it there to your CD-ROM also.

Basically, if you change the entries in all of these keys, then you should be able to get the reinstall to work off CD.

hope this helps

Thanks for trying to help out on this.
I ended up talking to one of our other offices that put another version of the install files out on the network for me.

Tried what you suggested, but it still errors out. Unfortunately, I think it is checking to make sure it is the same source version of Office as it was installed from (even though they are both Office 2000 Pro) more so than installing from the correct path.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated!
