Unable to link documents in Excel 2000

Hi,
I have a user who is opening an existing excel document, then trying to link another excel document to a field. However, when they do this, it throws up “Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program”
My first question is: Where are these error logs kept? and secondly, anyone know why this is happening?
