Unable to name Folders & No back peddlin

By jfradette ·
I've got a PII running NT4.0 SP6a. Back when I had SP5 I began experiencing an irritating problem or two. the first one is that when creating new folders, NT will not allow me to name the folder. Subsequently, each new folder is named "New Folder 1", "New Folder 2", etc. SOMETIMES it will slip up and allow me to Rename the folder, but most times it won't. So I've got a hoard of "New Folder"'s. I re-installed SP5 in hopes that this would rememdy the prob, but no such luck. Then I upgraded to SP6a, and the prob still persists. My second prob began happening about the same time-frame. That being that periodically while drilling thru MSIE5 (128bit) I lose the ability to back up via the "back" button on the toolbar. The "back" button is grayed out and I'm left with closing IE5 down and re-opening it then finding my way back to where I was previously. I have re-installed IE5, but this hasn't corrected this prob either. As mentioned earlier, I've also re-inst'ld SP5 and SP6a w/o any luck. I'm game for trying any

Unable to name Folders & No back peddlin

by dale In reply to Unable to name Folders & ...

These problems seem unrelated...

Problem #1 (can't name/rename folder):
What file system are you using (FAT or NTFS)?
Have you looked for viruses? Have you run chkdsk to make sure your MFT (if NTFS) is OK?
You do have rights to the drive/parent-folder, correct?

Problem #2 (IE can't go back): I have had this same problem with IE 5. It turned out to be a problem with running out of disk space on C: - once I freed up 100 Meg or so, the problem went away. PS - you might notice that you can't find your way back in the History either - that's because it seems like IE has overwritten it due to extremely low disk space (at least, that was what seemed to be happening to me).

I had a problem that is quiet the same as your first one (rename folders).
It occured after installing the Iomega zip Utilities. To solve this problem I had to remove the shortcut imgicon.exe from the all users sartup folder.
Maybe this can help you.
