When trying to open Outlook Express 6, the following error occurs- "Outlook Express has

encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".
Error Signature
AppName: msimn.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: wab32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180 Offset: 0000c51b

I am using Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6.0 latest update from microsoft. I am working on a company LAN.
I have performed several steps to resolve this.
These are the steps...
I. Performed sfc /scannow

II. I have followed the steps given below to reinstall OE 6 using registry editing.

Reinstalled Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps:
1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then

click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled

(REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.
To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed

4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.
6. Download IE 6 Sp1 from
7. To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows

Update Web site:

III.Got OE 6 setup from some websites and installed it. But, when trying to open OE, the
same error as stated above.

IV.Reinstalled OE from Add/Remove Windows Components in Control Panel.

V. Reinstalled XP SP2.

All the above steps didn't work.

Please suggest some steps other than Windows reinstall..........
I would be thankful if anyone can come up with steps to troubleshoot this issue....

A while back I had this same issue.

The fix I used was to search the HDD for all of the Current Users; Windows Address book files (*.WAB), and then I renamed the extension of the one I was using for that account.

Your address book should now be empty and you can go into OE again.

When you get back into Outlook Express, just import the contacts from the address book you renamed, it shouldn't import the corrupted contact. Or you could search your hard drive for a file that is named ~ (tilde character, this is a backup of the address book from one of the windows updates).
