Unable to PING second NIC

By jma2u ·
I have installed a second NIC in my NT 4.0(sp6) server to accomodate our DSL connection. Server runs DHCP and assigns internal IP addresses in the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx range. DSL line has completely different IP numbering assigned, something like 12.xxx.xxx.xxx. I can PING both cards from the server, obviously, and I can access the internet through the DSL line at the server. I cannot, however, ping or connect to the internet from any desktop on the LAN. IP forwarding is enabled. What am I missing?

If you want users on your LAN to connect to the DSL line, you would have to use the server's internal (LAN) IP address as the gateway, not the IP address of the NIC attached to the DSL line. Also, since you are using internal private IP addresses (192.168.x.x, I assume), you will need to have either a router or server running NAT or a proxy server between your internal and external networks. This also will provide added security to your server and internal systems which otherwise will be vulnerable to attack from outside. Hope this helps!
