Unable to PING to a user on the LAN

By tilsonkephas ·
One of the users on the LAN is unable to be pinged. I can see the user on the network, but unable to access its share folders. When I ping that computer it does not respond, "Request time out!.

Can someone please tell me what I did wrong!
Thank you

Unable to PING to a user on the LAN

by patelaa In reply to Unable to PING to a user ...

Hi

If you cannot ping, then how are you 'seeing' the user on the network?
If the PC appears in your explorer it could be because it was on the network previously.
Check all the basics first (cable, plug, drivers etc.)

Thanks

Unable to PING to a user on the LAN

If you can see the machine on the network, but can't ping it.. that most likely means the IP configuration on the machine is incorrect. Netbios/Netbeui is working so all things Microsoft see the machine, but if the machines default gateway or subnetmask is wrong you will not be able to ping it.

Double check the config.

Unable to PING to a user on the LAN

After a basic check of the cables, you should look to see if the user has a personal firewall installed. Also try pinging a computer on the same subnet as the one you wish to ping. If you have access to the switch or router, you should make sure that you have enabled icmp packets from your subnet to the other users subnet.

Another thing, what OS are you running on these systems. If you have 98 and XP they will be able to see each other but will not be able to talk to one another if the personal firewall is enabled on the XP machine. The other answers are also correct in assuming that you can refresh and see them but cannot ping them.can you ping any other computer on the network other than that one. have you tried pinging the other way around?

Unable to PING to a user on the LAN

I suggest you do the following:

1)Check the TCP/IP (IP/Subnet/Gateway)settings bounded to the NIC
2)Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
3)Enable File/Printer sharing
4)Restart the PC

You should be able to ping the PC & access it shares (depending onthe LAN share permission)

Regards.
