Unable to print large files

By jj.vergier ·
Hi,
I have a difficulty printing some large files.

Error message is :
Printer File
Error writing on LPT1 : for printer (HP Deskjet 815C Series Printer) : This function only valid in Win32 mode.

I can't figure this message out.

This happens often but not systematically.

PIII 750 MHz Win98SE 512 Mo

Thanks for your help !

Silly question, but have you downloaded the very latest driver direct from HP, and tried to uninstall the current (old) driver completely, then install the newer driver? I KNOW how easy it is to forget the simplest solution!!

Yes I tried this first thing. No chance.

or,
do you have plenty of free, defragged hard disk space?
you can try switching from EMF to RAW (or vice versa) in printer properties also

Yes I had tried that, no success. Thanks !

You should be having other problems with W98, that is too much RAM. W98 works much better with 384MB RAM.
Upgrade to XP PRo for $200 and should be good to go. Just an opinion, not a solution.

Yes, I limited teh RAM to 384Mb and it works finer.

This problem may involve the W98 large RAM bug. That would explain the Win32 error message.

Also, you need a lot of free hard drive space to deal with large files.

You might be able to change the print spooler settings to begin printing before the entire file is spooled.

If you are using a fixed size page file, the file may be too large for available virtual memory.

I changed my spooler settings before, without effect.

But the amount of RAM was important I think.

My page file is managed by W98.
I have plenty of free disk space (some GB on each partition).
I didn't find a way to print before spooling the entire first page. As the files I want to print are one-page images, I am still blocked.

One cue : I succeeded sometimes in printing big images using THE GIMP (1.2.4)...

Check to see if you have thedriver for win98se.
If you have drivers for NT/2000/XP, they will not work. the reason is fairly simple. Windows 98 is based on DOS, which is 16-bit. Some 32-bit applications will work, but not natively. You seem to have a problem with a 32-bit driver. THe drivers that should work can be found at "http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=59863&os=20&lang=en&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=dj856en". I hope this works for you!
