    Unable to read cd-rw’s

    Locked

    by mbertel ·

I recently copied a audio cd to a cd-rw. The CD ROM on the PC read the contents of the cd-rw with no problems. However, when I took the cd-rw to a portable cd player it did not recognize it at all. I remember reading something about either the media or the portable player itself will not recognize burned cd-rw or cd-r. Could I have a more detailed explaination. Would I get the same results if I used a cd-r? Thank you.

It has more to do with the encoding than the type of CD. If the audio CD has files encoded in a format that the portable will not recognize there is nothing you can do about it. Did your portable recognize the format of the audio CD initially? What software did you use to burn the CD? Did you do a CD to CD copy?

CD-RWs use a different file system than CDs and CD-R disks.

For a device to read the CD-RW, it has to have software or firmware that allows it to read the special file structure. Adaptec/Roxio refer to this as UDF reader.

Some newer CD players have CD-RW support. If the player supports CD-RW, it would be clearly stated in the sales literature, or on the package.

Refere to the players instructions for how to record CD-RWs that it can recognize.

You will have less of a problem with CD-Rs. But, some older players may have trouble with some CD-R disks. It has to do with the color of the disk, and the laser system in the player.

Easy. Very few normal audio cd players will be able to read a CDRW disk. You will have better luck burning onto a CDR and by using the choice of “create a music CD” from the choices in your burning software. By using that method, the software will burn the CD in the .CDA format and close the session when done burning. You portable player should then play the CD without problems. If that doesnt work, try another brand of CDR. Ive found the cheaper the CDR disk, the less likely it is to play on a CD player. Good luck!
