Unable to shut down the PC
Lockedby net designer · about 17 years, 11 months ago
Win98SE
Novell client 32 v3.4When user attempts to shut down his PC the following message is shown.
“Windows is currenlty working with a file. Either wait for Windows to finish, or close it before you quit Windows”.
Only able to shut down by pulling the plug.
Searching the Web did not give any reasonable clues.
Thanks.Topic is locked -

Does it have Internet connection? If so, it is probably running something you don’t want it to.
You are probably loaded up with SpyWare/Malware or possibly even a virus. Check your virus status first. If you are unfamiliar with spyware/Malware, check out the articles at:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1522416,00.asp
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1523357,00.asp
A good program to use if your Windows Viruscanner is compromised is either NOD32 for DOS trial at:
http://www.nod32.com/download/trial.htm
Or Mcafee’s Stinger at:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/After you are virus free then attack SpyWare.
For the Spyware/Malware the two best Free scanners are AdAware SE at:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
And Spybot Search & Destroy version 1.3 at:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
After Installing each check for updates before proceeding. Both have several cool tricks, Adaware has a custom search that can search your Hosts file and your archived files as well. SPpybot S&D has an new program called Teatime that doesn’t install by default you have to check the box when you are installing. SPybot S&D also has an Immunization program.Another excellent program is SpySweeper from http://www.webroot.com, it allows for one update and then you need to purchase to get anymore updates. It will find a lot that the two free one didn’t.
I also use PestPatrol which also costs money. It is located at:
http://www.pestpatrol.com/ and they have a free pest scan if you can stay on the Internet long enough.Steve Gibson also has several really good security tools as well as his famous “Shields UP” tester at:
http://www.grc.comWhen you are all clean, get the free ZoneAlarm 4.5 at:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zapSetup_45_594_000.exe-

This is a slighly older version, but the is a problem with version 5.0.
Or even better buy the Pro version.
Download at: http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html
If you don’t have a virus scanner you can get a good free one at:
http://www.free-av.com/
or:
AVG v 7.0 at:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.phpIt might be a good idea to also install “IESPyAd”, it will add some custom (known) certificates to your block list so you don’t get hijacked.

We already use NAVCE v9, SpyBot v1.3 and whatever version of AdAware. All PCs are protected here and this particular one was scanned with all possible tools to no avail.
As you see, your suggestions were already tried before I even posted this question, but thank you for your effort anyway.

Try the Bazooka Spyware scanner, it isn’t automatic like Adaware or Spybot S&D but the guy has manual reg edit details that are great & specific. Down in the middle; Download Bazooka Spyware Scanner link.
Also try HijackThis and look @ the log, post it to one of the boards listed. Let the experts tell you what they see.
Down on the left; HijackThis button.
Good Luck!

It could be that Win98 has attempted to load a file on startup that it can’t close.
Go to START, RUN, type MSCONFIG, and choose last tab STARTUP. Review the list, you may some file you want to disable by unchecking it in the list. Choose APPLY, OK, and then restart or use the Reset button. -

Use ctrl/alt/del to see what is running
Use ms config to diagnose the problem.
It might shorten your list if you unplug a network cable or phone line before you shutdown. ( I have met this a few times)
Do a microsoft update.
Scan for virus and scan for spyware etc. all the usual. -
