Unable to start IE 6.0

By lmayeda ·
For the past week I have been unable to start Internet Explorer 6.0. Message to the effect that Microsoft IE has encountered an error and need to restart. I located a Microsoft KB 281679 article "You cannot open a new Internet Explorer Window ..." which suggests a correction to the registry (which I made once) and to Start Run Regsvr32 for 6 dlls (urlmon.dll mshtml.dll, actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Shell32.dll, Shdocvw.dll). I can then run IE successfully. However, at the end of the day, I leave my PC on but locked and in the morning I need to go through the same process to access the internet. Is anyone familiar with this? The article also mentions the IE Administration Kit (IEAK) that the problem is relaed to a custom install ... of which I know nothing. My PC runs W2k, IE 6.0. Thanks

There is a hotfix available to resolve that issue, but you must contact Microsoft for it.

Contact numbers are located in the URL below:

I saw that but I was trying to get away without having to pay out for the hotfix.

if that is the only error message you are getting and this used to work i would download and run an adware remover tool such as adaware SE from www.lavasoftusa.com

Do you know of a specific spyware that may be the cause of this problem? I run the free Adaware program yesterday and just ran Spybot Search and Destroy today.

Re Answer 1 which you summarily rejected. MS normally does not charge for hot fixes such as these. They are usually either tricky to install or may lead to dire consequences and not made available to the general public.

I ended up re-installing Internet Explorer and so far I have not had to run the 6 .dlls to get it started. Thanks for your response. I couldn't get to Microsoft for the hotfix. Since IE came with my system, MS said that I had to go to the manufacturer.
