unable to telnet smtp port 25 on exchange?

By danzmanz ·
Hello,

When I attempt to telnet to my exchange server smtp port 25 it takes me to the default command prompt. I have disabled the antivirus and windows firewall to no avail. There is only one server that is able to telnet into the exchange server even while antivirus is running on both ends. There is nothing else but exchange listening on smtp port so it is not busy. The exchange is able to telnet to 25 successfully. This is on the same subnet so routers and firewalls should not be a problem.

any ideas???

Request for Clarification

Clarify:

Is your exchange server just on the local network, or is this Internet facing? Does it have one LAN interface, or two?

What do you mean 'there is only one server that is able to telnet into the server'?
You mean another PC on the same network as your PC CAN telnet to the exchange server?

If you run NMAP on your workstation and point it to the IP of your exchange server, what ports are open?

clarification

The exchange is set up with OWA so it is accessible from the internet if that is what you are referring to. It has only one LAN interface.

Correct. Only one other PC is able to telnet to SMTP port 25. I have looked at the services and there is nothing that stands out. Sophos claims that their software and appliance do not restrict any ports. Windows firewall is not on. I can telnet to the IMAP port from any other pc but for SMTP only one particular pc.

I have put the sophos appliance IP as the smtp server and it works fine.
