unable to view desktop icons on linux

I am unable to view desktop icons on linux and Shortcuts to linux desktop. i have tried creating a shortcut and draging it to the desktop and nothing happens no error nothing and i have tried the send to command from the right click menu, nothing happens please help have searched everywere not articales.

What flavour linux?

This isn't uncommon - I see it on Mandriva KDE quite a bit. I tell my users they shouldn't be saving things onto the desktop anyway as it spoils the lovely company logo underneath.

hi

i was use RHEL 4.i was mount cd in cdrom device in Gnome ,but i saw a message box contains some errror messsge,but after i remove the cd my gnome desktop icons(home,My computer ..)are disappeared.there are no icons show in my desktop and no right click in mouse in desktop.

but task panel is working,i was select menus in start menu it was working.

tell me how to recover my desktop icons in my system,

kindly send details immediately,becuase i was wait this mail.
