Locked

Unattended lockups

By Fred C. Tucker ·
Using a Pentium III 500, 256meg RAM, RIVA TNT2 M64 - video card, and WIN 98 SE. The computer is left on, and unattended. There is no applications running in the background, including screen savers. After some time has passed (could be hours) the computer is completely locked up. The only way to recover is a hard shut-down and restart.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this, and if so, any recommendations?

Check your power saver settings and see how they are set up. Try disabling all of them (HD, Monitor, etc.) and see if it still locks up. If it does not, then put them back to your desired settings one at a time untill the problem comes back, and then try to upgrade the drivers for that piece of hardware or leave the powersaver function off for that item.

Ensure that the PC is not suffering from a clogged CPU/Power Supply fan.
