    Unattended tape backups with NTBACKUP

    Locked

    by brian_e ·

What steps do I need to perform to schedule an unattended backup with Windows 2000’s builtin NTBACKUP?

I have scheduled a backup, but when the event is triggered it cannot find a free tape in the pool.

Each day, our secretary replaces the tapein the server (this is a different tape each day of the week). She does not logon to the server.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards,
    Brian

i believe that you have to write a batch file or script and then schedule it via the AT command in order for NTBACKUP to go unattended.
this is explained in the MS article Q103474

here is part of that document:

The Backup utility included with Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced
Server does not include functionality for scheduling unattended
backups. However, using the Schedule service in conjunction with the
command line capabilities of the Backup utility, you can set up
      unattended backups.

I can schedule the backup. The event is triggered.

If using the AT command, how do I force it to use the tape in the drive without a message about tape being unavailable or not free.. or not in the pool.

I would like this process to work evenif a completelynew tape is inserted by the secretary.

        Please provide sample batch file.

Ok then, how about this one:

There were several solutions in the article so i will just put the article name and description. You can look it up, or i can send an email to you. Please read this article before you rate the answer.

      Q267574

When you schedule a Windows 2000 unattended backup by using a standalone tape
drive (library), the first backup job completes successfully. However, after you
change the media, the next scheduled backup job does not back up the desired
folder and files. Also, you may receive one of the following error messages in
      the backup report log file:

The operation was not performed because no unused media was available.
      -or-
Operation was not performed, because the specified media cannotbe found.
