Undeletable files in Windows XP

by ingegeneral . Updated 15 years, 7 months ago

I recently bought a new PC with Windows XP Home edition. I have an UMAX Astra 1220U scanner and Omnipage 8.0. In migrating this set up I ran into problems. In Control Panel under Scanners and Camera I can see the scanner when it is turned on and plugged in. I also can see the Caere Scanmanger in the control panel. The set-up did not work so I borrowed Omnipage 9.0 from a friend and installed it. This did not work either.

Then I deleted both versions of OmniPage with Norton’s Uninstall Wizzard. This left some files in the program direcory. Most of them I was able to delete manually. However, when I try to delete REMIND32.EXE (all in caps), or OPware32.exe, or OPHOOK32.dll I get a message that I am not authorized to do so. I am the only user of this computer and have administrator authority. Looking at the properties of the files I find that neither one is read only or archived or protected in any other visible way. I have even tried to rename the files to things like “junk.txt” Still no luck in deleting them.

I also still have the Scanmanager icons in the control panel although the related direcories are totally empty except for the above listed files.

Is there any hope?

Thanks.
Inge
