    Unerasable folders

    by doniel ·

AVG set up a quarantine folder on my hard disk without asking me which hard drive I want it on. I’ve tried to simply erase it, to use “unlocker” programs to accomplish that and even to try it in earlier versions of Windows. It’s visible in Windows 11, but invisible in Windows 10 and 8.1. This, despite the fact that I have View options in File Explorer in all 3 versions set to show hidden and operating system folders.
AVG tech support claims that I can’t (am unable to) erase the folder. Is there any way to do so anyway?
On another topic, I’d like to take advantage of the fact that I’m posting to ask another question that’s been bothering me for a long time.
I use Start Menu X to replace Windows’ Start button. In its Options, I have “Launch the program with Windows” checked off. So how come sometimes it loads and other times it doesn’t – Windows’ own Start button is there instead?

Boot into Linux (for DVD or USB-stick). It’s likely it can be seen (and erased) there.

For the question about Start Menu X, I suggest (1) see if their site has a FAQ or (2) google it or (3) ask the maker..

I boot up any of the usual Linux off USB sticks. If I don’t have such I make one. With today’s distros I won’t write you have to learn Linus.

kees_b, Bob, I have an old motherboard and the BIOS doesn’t support booting from USB.

Download your preferred Unix distro (pick one from https://www.google.com/search?q=best+linux for example) and burn the iso-file to a (re)writeable DVD with a program like IMGBURN (free). Then boot from that DVD.

You were absolutely right. I was able to delete the folders in Linux.
          Thank you, kees_b!
Will need a little more time to check on Start Menu X. I’ll post back when I’ve done so.

          No FAQ.
Wrote Support but when I wrote them on a different matter early in their war with Russia, they never replied. Waiting to see if they do now.
Googling is hopeless. Despite Google’s search rules that specify that terms within quotes get searched on as a whole, one of the search terms I used – “Start Menu X” – resulted in a few hits, but mostly sites dealing with just “Start Menu.”

          A few remarks:
          1. Search in Bing with quotes works fine: https://www.bing.com/search?q=%22start+menu+x%22
          2. How about another such program. I use Open Shell , an open source program from https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/ .

I never received notification that there were new posts, so just saw them now on the 21st.
Bob, I assume you’re aware that the author’s in Ukraine and that you were just being humorous.
kees_b, thanks. Will take a look.
