Unexpected Error XPS2 Upgrade

By jaylasun ·
I am trying to install a newly purchased version of WindowsXP SP2 onto my Gateway2000 233MHz.
At the end of the install during reboot, the error message states

"an unexpected error (0) on line 1773 d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c."

Press any key to continue.

Help. What does this mean and how do i solve it.

Hi, got your message, then noticed your question.

First off, even though Microsoft claims you can run XP on a 233 MHz system, I would not install XP on anything slower than 500 MHz.

The error statement points to an error in a file that is being installed for the SP2 upgrade.

You may have run out of free RAM, free hard drive space, or the file is bad.

How much RAM do you have?
I would want at least 256MB. More if the motherboard supports it.
The slower your CPU, the more critical it is to have as much RAM as possible for Windows.

I would press any key, and allow the service pack installer to exit on it's own.

Then, wipe the \xpsprtm folder and start over again on the SP2 update.

Still, I highly recommend getting a faster system.

I have seen 1 GHz used systems selling for less than $200 in the US.
