UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN

By CLIFFL ·
For some unknown reason my pc shuts down after about 20 minutes (varies). Running Win2k SP4, all uptodate inc virus scanner & spy software.
And no its nothing to do with bios or power settings they are all set to never shutdown. !!
The only common denominator is that the seti screensaver is running when it powers down.
It wont startup by just pressing the power button, I have to switch power off at the mains switch and wait 15 seconds.

Have you tried disabling the screensaver to find out for sure if that's the cause?

Was just printing some church menus and the darned thing just shutdown, so obviously nothing to do with the screensaver, guess its going to be trial and error swopping out psu etc.

umm as you commented, I would swap out the power supply and see if that clears up the problem before thinking it's a windows problem.

Other suggestions [and these are just suggestions] Did you check the event viewer and see if there's anything funky there in applications, system?

Is the shutdown a BSD stop error with mem dump?

Do you have hibernate enabled ? Have found some software updates change windows settings back to default. If on reboot it does not run scandisk, I would suspect hibernate mode.

Otherwise check the vent holes on the PC for dust buildup, with power off you can safely clean these with a vaccuum.

Changed the case (new psu) and been running for 2 hours now, so looks like it was the psu.
