However it does not apply to ME or 2000.
I know for Win2k you have to reinstall the OS. This works fine for Win2k but I don’t know if ME will do as well with the task.
Hope this helps… -

Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel. Then select(double click) the Add/Remove Programs icon. Look in the list of installed programs for “Microsoft Internet Explorer”. Click “Add/Remove”.
The select “Restore the previous Windows configuration” and click “Ok”. Then the Internet Explorer screen comes up.
Click OK to restore the previous version of IE. Afterwards you will need to restart your system.-

This is not possible with ME as there is no previous version of IE.

Internet Explorer is integrated into the Operating System on WinMe… which means that IE 5.5 cannot be easily removed.
I suggest that you:
1) download or obtain the IE 5.0 release that you wish to install.
2) search your registry for iexplore.exe and delete all keys to it.
3) search your system files/folders for iexplore.exe and get rid of the entire folder.
4) install IE 5.0-

Back up first. The odds that you’ll lose any data are very small, but it’s always a good practice before any major system maintenance. This is also an excellent time to check your hard disk for errors using ScanDisk, and to defragment it for faster performance.
Remove IE 5.5. This surgery isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Open Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. From the list of installed programs, select the entry for Internet Explorer 5.5 and Web Tools, and then click the Add/Remove button.
If IE 5.5 isn’t in this list, don’t despair. As odd as it may sound, the easiest solution is usually to reinstall IE 5.5. After completing Setup, the program should appear in the list of installed programs so you can remove it.
After you remove IE 5.5, your system reverts to an earlier browser version–typically the one that was originally installed with your operating system. If you’re running the original release of Windows 98, for instance, you may find thatInternet Explorer 4.0 has reappeared on your machine, even if you had previous upgraded to IE 5. This is perfectly normal.Reinstall IE 5.01 with Service Pack 1. Click here to jump to the Microsoft page that contains the upgrade files and follow the wizard’s instructions.
Restart your system and check your PC’s vital signs. If the installation process went well, you should now be running Internet Explorer version 5.00.3105.0106. (No, that’s not a typo. Although Microsoft calls it Internet Explorer 5.01, the internal version number is stuck at 5.00.) To check the version number, open a browser windows and choose Help, About Internet Explorer.
Install any critical updates and security updates, but resist the offer to install IE 5.5!
