Uninstalling Internet Explorer on Win98

By richard.reiter ·
Does anyone have a foolproof way to remove IE from Win98 (SE)? I need to uninstall it and reinstall it, as I know that there were problems during the upgrade from W98 to W98 SE on this particular pc. Simply reinstalling W98 SE doesn't upgrade thefiles or the registry settings that are corrupted. This is exactly the same as the issue the Justice Dept. did when they proved that MS was lying when they indicated you could not remove IE from the OS.
Thanks,
.Richard.

No fool proof way to uninstall IE5,using the Add/Remove programs, click on Internet Explorer and then click the remove button, you will then get a pop up window and then you want to restore to previous version of IE,then you can reinstall to the latest version if prefered.

This would have worked, but unfortunately IE wasn't registered correctly so it could be removed that way.

Hi Richard,

Like answer 1 there is no foolproof way of uninstalling IE. It does not remove all the files or in the Registry. Instead of uninstalling IE, I would suggest that you go to Windows Update, and download all the files for the latest fixes or patches for IE.

Microsoft is pushing its latest version of IE 5.5. I do not suggest you download that version, because it is causing a lot of headaches for those who have downloaded it.

If this does not help you resolve your problem, please e-mail me, and I will see what I can do to correct the problems on your computer.

Good luck and have a great day.

It would help me to know what version of IE you have installed. To get the information click Start, Click Run, and type "msinfo32.exe.

This will give you the information about you computer system and what verison of Windows and IE you have installed, with other information about your system.

Thanks,

Don Thibodaux.

Hi Richard, When registry keys get left behind
During an application install, application files get copied to a directory, and the installer updates the system's registry. The registry, as you probably know, contains "keys" that determine the physical makeup of the entire system, including all hardware and software installed.

Of course, you can manually uninstall an application using either the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs utility or by using the uninstall applet that comes with mostcommercial programs. To the uninitiated, it would appear that the application would be completely gone after uninstalling it. But not always.

You rarely search the system's registry without finding any keys referencing that same application you just removed. Under circumstances where only a small number of applications have been uninstalled, the erroneous or unnecessary keys left in the registry may not cause any problems.

However, over time, the number of applications added and removed from an operating system can add up, and those leftover registry keys can eventually degrade system performance. These registry keys reference values and files that, after uninstalling an application, no longer exist. When someone attempts to run an application that accesses these non-existent files or values, the end result could leave the user with a machine that has stopped responding.

The only way I found was by using 98lite.
This is an excilent utility gives you far more control over Win98 then you thought possible. Try the site and read for yourself: www.98lite.net --shareware by donation. Very relibable.
