uninstalling program

By sbhuck ·
I downloaded a supposed update for ie 5.5 sp2 called Q306121. When ever it shows up in My Documents, I get the old "This program has pperformed and illegal act and will shutdown".
This also happens when I use Finf folded of file. The second the firsst entry for Q306121 appears, the same error message appears. I have isolated it to this q306121, by sending it to a Floppy, and when the floppy is opened and this file is ther , so is the error message.
I have tried to uninstall or delete it, but It says "the disc might be right protected or program is being used".
How do I get rid of it. I have deleted all refernces to it in my registry, and this has done nothing.
Thank you
Wilbur Huck

Hi Wilbur,

My first concern is that you may have a trojan on your PC that is looking to block the installation of the update.

Start by updating your anti-virus software, and scanning the entire disk.

Next, try booting into safe mode and seeif you can delete the update from there.

If all else fails, you can boot to the command prompt, or from a boot floppy, and manually delete the file.
From the A: DOS prompt;
C: (press enter)
cd mydocu~1 (press enter)
dir /w (press enter)
del q306121.exe (press enter)

That should get rid of the file.

I believe that there were 3 versions of this update. It is still on the list of critical updates for IE 5 and 5.5

I checked all the other things, and I do keep my antivirus updated every day. Thanks for bailing me out again. I keep a Chas file which contains all the answers you have provided for my questions, and Ihave often found when a new problem comes up, that one of your past answers solves my problems. Thanks
