Universal Server rack?

by GuruOfDos In reply to Universal Server rack?

Standard rack systems should be compatible, i.e. 19" nominal width. All 'rack mount' equipment should fit any 19" rack!! The width of the equipment should be standard, but the heights may vary. All rack mount equipment is measured in 'U' for height, where 1U is approx 44mm. Rack mount gear is described in terms of it's height, i.e. 1U, 2U, 3U etc. The '19" Rack' is divided into width units called HP. A full width rack is 84 HP wide, and a half width rack is 42 HP.

So long as your rack mount equipment conforms to these industry standards (and both IBM and Compaq do!) then any rack frame should accept either server brand.
