University Network Bandwidth

By jeremy ·
My friend is attending UT Austin and then allow 4GB of bandwidth usage a week. He claims that he used it up in a matter of a day or two playing internet games and doing some web browsing. He doesnt download video or audio or large files. Does internet gaming such as Wolfenstein use up a lot of bandwidth? Should 4GB last longer than that? Let me know.

No that's quite normal, especially on high speed networks. Many business class providers will base their charge on bandwidth used each month and they do not offer unlimited downloads.

They also provide a secure and managed service so it costs more to give you your bandwidth. Now 4Gigs in a day or two of Wolfenstein sounds a little rich but I can se it over three or maybe four days no problem.

A private (Business class) ISP in my area says usage averages 1.9 > 3 Gigs per day from most of his clients. Now these guys are just using email, webmailand the odd online portal for their web interfaces. A VPN linked office would consume MUCH higher bandwidth and may spendin excess of $300.00 month in bandwidth alone without line costs and service included.

In short, once you leave the confortable "download all you like" residential services, it becomes secure, consistent and expensive.

The meter spins quite fast when you're paying for it, or in your friends case, restricted by it.
