Unix Support Requirements

By jtgourley ·
We're in the process of "in-sourcing" portions of our data center, and are looking for information to determine staffing requirements for our Unix systems. Is anyone aware of documentation that provides metrics for things like how many support personnel should be allocated on a per server, per user, etc. basis? Do you have any "general rules of thumb" that can be used to propose and justify hiring new employees or consultants?

Thanks.

300 - 600 users per tech

I've worked with support departments for 800 to 8000 users in Unix environments. I would suggest one analyst for every 300 - 600 users on your system. If you go over 10 servers then you should have more than one analyst. Consider hiring a seasoned consultant for the first 60 days of this transition so that the daunting initial implementation will have adequate support. Having a dedicated analyst work at his side will prepare the analyst to assume the duties afterwards.
