My question is. Is there a way to do an automated backup from a Unix file system(ufs) to a windows shared drive(nt) that is a usb external drive.
This shared drive is a WD bookend 250 gig, and when I tried to hook it to my BSD box, it basically blew chunks with mass storage errors. This OS is FreeBSD 6.1, and I really didn’t want to fight the battle so I just connected the drive to my Windows Box.
I was thinking of using the dump command, but I want to be able to access this backup drive from my windows box if my Unix box goes belly up. And the dump, as I understand it would copy the file system over as it is. Ie: ufs
I need the option of doing full backups, say on a monthly basis…. Other times, only backing up new files. I currently am using the UNIX copy for this operation, and it took. Eh, day and a half for a full day backup.
I’m sure that there are multiple reasons this took forever… Home network, the fact that both the originating drive and the backup drive are usb.
Any suggestions? Or, should I just bite the bullet and deal with the long backup time when I do my monthly backups? Right now I can’t afford to build the raid 5 unit I want, just because I bought new furniture…
