Unknown Virus? Keeps me out of Registry.

By randerson7 ·
This XP Home ED. machine will not let me run any executables. I cannot install software, etc. I cannot run regedit nor other commands from Run. I have also tried to upgrade to Pro, but it comes up with errors due to not being able to load product catalogs, a "fatal error". The setup log states that "Setup had problems registering the following OLEcontrol DLL: c:\windows\system32\initpki.dll. The machine had a virus program called Armor Shield recently provided by Road Runner free for one year. I could not determine if it had been updated at any time. Also, the set up screen splashes by too fast to get into it. Any ideas.

Try renaming Regedit.exe to Regedit.com to get round it. Look at the registry fixes for SWEN virus to get you to run programs again at
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100662.htm

I suggest getting a new AV product such as the free AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
and keep it updated!

You have to get rid of the vorus before doing anything.
A good program to use if your Windows Viruscanner is compromised is either NOD32 for DOS trial at:
http://www.nod32.com/download/trial.htm
Or Mcafee's Stinger at:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Turn off system restore before starting.

A format / reinstall should only really be the last line of resort in my book :)

Try getting into msconfig (start > run > msconfig) to see what is in the startup and services tab....

If it doesn't let you in normally, try booting into safe mode (bash F8 repeatedly after POST) if it comes up with an error saying some dll is missing (starts with "n" by memory) then the virus has done more damage than expected...

Try booting into "safe mode with command prompt" then when it starts up hit ctr-alt-del and start a new process "explorer"

This has worked many times for me, the first step is to dig out the rouge entries and services out of regedit and msconfig - the second step is to get some half decent antivirus

If you must go for "free" antivirus, go for AVG (google search it - i cant remeber the url :))

Rather than formatting and reinstalling better you try an online virus scan. Search on google for free online virus scan.
This might let you know which virus you have. Also check for windows updates
