Unlocking computer takes a minute

When I unlock my IBM T22 Win2000 laptop it takes a minute before I get my desktop with the open windows again. Just the background is displayed.
When I logoff instead of locking the computer, and logon again the desktop is almost immediately available. During unlocking there is almost no disk activity. How to resolve this annoying behavior of my laptop ?
