Unplugging USB device causes Restrictions message to pop up.

By ldregely ·
Can someone please help me locate the correct policy to clear the message, "Restrictions - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer..." It appears when a user clicks on the icon in the sys tray to remove USB flash pen device. Users are members of the power users group. Thank you.

Need Answer to the Same Question

by cathig In reply to Unplugging USB device cau ...

I'm managing a computer lab and couldn't be happier if I never saw another floppy disk. We have USB dongles added to every machine, but users cannot safely remove USB drives unless I log them on as Administrator and this is just not possible. The default logon is set to Restricted User, but as the original post says, it also happens with Power User. I have many registry edits restricting use of the computer and would like to know which, if any, of these I should modify. I have had a couple users lose files probably because of unsafe removal; however, most of the time the file is still there. I would prefer for them to be able to stop the device properly before removing, though. Thanks! (My apologies that brevity is not my strongpoint today)

Are you on a network

If you are on a network, then ask yourself are you the administrator or just a user.

If you are the administrator, then you have to log in with your administrator account and change the policy for the user that you log in as.

However, if you are just a user, you have to contact the administrator and have him or her change it for you.

I'm seeing the same problem. I'm an admin. So what steps need to be taken in order to change the policy for a restricted user? Would you happen to have a link to a site that might have those steps listed?
Thank you!

Had the same problem. Mine was caused by a group policy on the OU that prevented access to the disk management mmc. Allow access to it and the problem goes away.

Dear BlueScreen,

Could I get the steps needed to your fix you suggested?

When a student wants to turn off and safely remove the flash drive he or she will click that green arrow icon for the flash drive located in the lower right hand task bar and then will receive the following message.

"Restrictions: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

All of our machines are clones, so we recieve the same message on each one.

However, We have one PC with admin rights to the user so we are able to safely turn off and remove flash drives from it.

Thanks!
