Unpredictable freezes in WinXP

By kagny ·
I have a 866 mhz pentium 3, 386 mb SDRAM, 32 mb video card and a 30 gig hard drive, running under Windows XP Professional.

SCENARIO:
My PC Unpredictably freezes, either on startup or 5 hours after startup, the computer completley freezes reulting in me restarting - when i do start my computer up, theres a high chance that it will freeze at the Windows XP Pro loading screen. this will happen a number of times so i have to repeatedly restart until it does startup, but then it might freeze again when windows has loaded. i have foematted numerous times to rectify the problem but it still happens. i tried replacing my SDRAM with a freind of mine suspecting that this was the problem but it still happen. I think it is a hardware fault...Can ANYONE please shed some light?

Okay...first, have you checked to make sure that your CPU fan is properly installed and functional? That all faceplates and backplates for unused bays and expansion slots are in place? There is a chance that overheating may be causing the problem.

Also, it may be a problem with software that is running in the background. When you press ctrl+alt+delete you will see a list of all programs currently running. Explorer and Systray are the only essential ones. There may also be a few more on there for auto system maintenance, virus protection, etc. If you installed other programs that are running in the background, they will be listed there.

To troubleshoot problems with these programs, you can use a selective startup in msconfig. Go to the start menu, click "run" and type "msconfig". I can't remember if it's different for XP, but there should be a "Startup" tab. There, you can check or uncheck boxes for the programs you want to run at startup. If you think you know which one is causing the problem, simply uncheck that box. Otherwise, you can test different settings.

I agree with answer #1... it sounds like your processor is overheating. Try replacing the fan and see if that makes a difference. Have you tried booting up in safe mode to see if you are having some type of conflict?
