Unread mail on welcome screen xp - office 2003

By ploquit ·
Hi, Hopefully someone has seen this before.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running XP home.

What i've done to get here.

PC Restore - yep, total whip-out
Update windows
Installed printer drivers (had it's own issues, now resolved)
Installed Office 2003
Installed Publisher 2003
Microsoft update.... Service Pack 3
Configued Office in my identity
Created 2 NEW Identities
Configured Office in one other identity

When log out of my identity on Windows xp Home sp2, The welcome screen still shows I have 5 unread mail messages. So far, it is just this one identity that is doing this.

I only have outlook express (not configured with an account) and outlook 2003. I have double checked both programs to confirm that the mail was indeed read.

my question is....
How do I make the unread mail counter work properly on the xp welcome screen? I've heard tweakUI can be used to turn the counter off, but i'd rather have it work properly.

I've been uninstalling / restoring / updating /restarting for 20hrs straight. I need more brains to help me find the solution.

Uninstall MSN Messenger...........

The unread message count comes from your hotmail/msn identity which is still logged in when you logged out of the computer. It has nothing to do with Outlook.

There is no messenger

by ploquit In reply to Uninstall MSN Messenger.. ...

I have no messenger to uninstall from add/remove programs.

This is everything I have in add/remove programs for "m"'s framework 1.1 and the hotfix framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 framework 3.0 Service Pack 1
Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for windows xp
Microsoft office publisher 2003
Microsoft office standard edition 2003
Microsoft Plus! Digital media edition Installer
Microsoft Plus! Photo Story 2 LE
Microsoft Silverlight
Microsoft User mode driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0
modem Event monitor
Modem Helper
Modem on Hold
Mozilla Firefox
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181)
MSXML 6.0 Parser (KB933579)
Musicmatch Jukebox
My Way Search Assistant

and under W we have
Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)
Windows Media Format 11 Runtime
Windows Media Player 11
WordPerfect Office 12
So that's add remove programs.

then i look in c:/program files/

Windows Messenger is there (no uninstall files) as is MSN (no uninstall file either). I have never used either once since doing the pc recovery. Do i need to install it then uninstall? could I use windows live messenger?

regedit ??? scary

by ploquit In reply to Unread mail on welcome sc ...

I found this in another thread....

You can either turn it off with Tweak UI, see Logon then Unread Mail and untick Show unread mail on Welcome screen.
Alternatively, you can use Regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\UnreadMail and delete the entry.

How dangerous is this. i have zero experience with regedit and barely know how to turn it on.

Do i need to creat a new key?

this is what it shows in the editor...
UnreadMail Messages (it has one REG_SZ entry.. it has a icon with the letters ab in it, it sais (default), and under data, Value not set..

But in the UnreadMail is a subfolder named **** (replace the stars with my real name-I'm used stars for more privacy in the forums)
Anyway, in this folder are 4 entries

ab(default) REG_SZ (value not set)
abApplication REG_SZ %SystemDrive%\PROGRA~1\MI1933~1\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE /profile Outlook

these next two have the 011 110 blue numbers on white background icon
MessageCount REG_DWORD 0X00000005 (5)
TimeStamp REG_BINARY then a MAC address (to what? I'm not even sure how to check... I only know what a mac address looks like from installing a wireless home network on 2 vista computers... this one is not on the network... totally different internet access altogether

If I delete MessageCount, How will the system know the true message count... does this registry get recreated somehow?
