Unregognized 30Gg Drive in Win98

By jwcornejo ·
I formated a 30Gg drive using FDISK and specified "Fat32" one partition of 30Gg (I know, bad idea) during formating. I installed Win98 and tons of software but just realized that Win98 only sees a 4Gg drive instead of 30Gg. I went into MSDOS mode and using the "DIR" command, it shows me that I have close to 27Gg of free space but in Windows mode it shows me only 1.5Gg of free space... It took me over 8 hours to reconfigure this machine, anyone have any clue how to make Windows see the rest of the drive w/o me starting from scratch?

I would guess that you need a bios update to your machine. Does your current bios report the correct size of the drive? Your only other option is to use partition magic and extend the partition to fit the drive.

Have a good one.

You need to get yourself a bios flash. You can find them on the internet. Do a search on "bios flash" on yahoo.

Since DOS is able to 'see' the whole drive, I do not believe your BIOS is at fault. If this is a UDMA33 or UDMA66 drive, then you need to install the Windows 9.x UDMA drivers. One way to tell is to look in device manager and see if you have a "mass controller unknown device" if so, install the UDMA driver for the mass controller. (UDMA driver)

Absolutely! Flash your Bios. Also, you might try looking into 3rd party disk overlay software. I know some larger drives, like Western Digital comes with their own software that must be installed first so your system will see the entire drive. This software alters your Bios so you can use your full drive.
